Children from 18 primary schools in Trowbridge who have been affected by cancer or life threatening illness are being offered free, specialist counselling by the charity Positive Action on Cancer (PAC).
Children will be offered weekly counselling at the Hub, the Extended Schools’ facility at The John of Gaunt School. The service is available to children from all Trowbridge primaries who have been bereaved, who have a parent or loved one with cancer or another life threatening illness or who have cancer themselves. Children and families can arrange to see a counsellor by speaking to the school.
“We know from our own experience and from published research that cancer, life threatening illness and the loss of a loved one can have a long term impact on children’s emotional health and that the right kind of support can make a profound difference” says Mary Taylor, Director of PAC. “We have provided support for younger children from our Frome headquarters for several years and are delighted to be able to offer this service in schools.”
Jayne Bullock, Trowbridge Area Schools Co-ordinator welcomed the initiative saying ‘ We are grateful to PAC for this opportunity. This alliance is indicative of Trowbridge Schools desire to ensure the very best outcomes for all children across the community, which can only be achieved by collaborative working with a wide range of different agencies and children support services. ‘
