Jill Miller: Founder of PAC

"The motivation behind all Jill's efforts on behalf of PAC has always been to help people in the community, at a time in their lives when they are vulnerable and in need to emotional support.  She has dedicated herself to this end since 1994.  It is wonderful that this professional help is absolutely free since so many people face financial hardships as a result of cancer"  -  Phyllis Higgins  - PAC senior administrator.

Nominated for the Beacon Fellowship and Inspirational Woman of the Year Award by Good Housekeeping magazine, Jill was described by Dr. Verna Lavender (Senior lecturer in cancer care) as:

" A truly remarkable woman, who through her exceptional commitment, has founded a unique, yet essential, charitable service offering free, one-to-one counselling by paid professional counsellors to anyone affected by, or bereaved by, cancer in the South West of England.

Following her own diagnosis of cancer in 1993, Jill has invested her full time and energy to developing Positive Action on Cancer to the groundbreaking and successful charity it is today.  Without Jill's exceptional contribution PAC would not exist, and consequently a significant number of people affected by cancer would not have received vital psychological support they needed."

Jill Miller said on her leaving:

“PAC has been a wonderful personal journey for me, one in which I wouldn’t have missed a day. There have been so many people to thank on the way; people who have been involved in the nuts & bolts of the organisation, people who have generously donated their time for fundraising and of course the staff, the committed volunteer team and the board of trustees. My respect and appreciation goes to the counselling team at PAC, led by Mary Taylor. These are the people on the coal-face, who have made a difference to the lives of people with cancer. I leave the service in good hands.

I would like to thank the people of Frome, for taking this charity to its heart and supporting it without reservation. I hope this great support will continue long into the future”

A representative from PAC stated:

"On behalf of the trustees we are extremely grateful to Jill for the time and dedication she has put in over the last 14 years to make PAC the charity which it now is. We are confident that the strong foundation that has been put in place by Jill will ensure the growth and ongoing success of this extremely beneficial service. Although we are aware of a number of projects and interests, which will undoubtedly keep Jill very busy in her retirement, the relationship between her and the charity will certainly continue. She has our heartfelt wishes for the future.

The service has changed and grown immeasurably - from a telephone helpline initially operating out of Jill and husband John's spare room to now receiving over one hundred clients per year offering 32 hours worth of sessions per week of professional counselling face to face. And the future looks set to grow even more with the opening of a much-cherished children's counselling service in April 2008. Jill has a lot to be proud of."

Summer Walk for Charity 2007

On Sunday June 10th and for the second year running, a walk and cream tea has been organised to offer a pleasant Sunday with a difference while raising funds for local cancer charity, Positive Action on Cancer. The walk begins at Ammerdown Estate and extends to the beautiful surrounding countryside.

Walkers can choose one of two routes, a 1½ hour walk or the longer 2½ hour route. The shorter walk is accessible for wheelchair users and buggies.

The routes take walkers through woods and fields onto panoramic views, then through both the Ammerdown estate and the grounds of Babington House. At the end of the route, walkers can choose to rest and revive, taking advantage of an afternoon cream tea and home made cakes. The walk takes place between 1pm and 5pm, with cream teas available between 2.30pm and 5pm.

Maps for the walk are available from The Tourist Information Board at the Round Tower, Bridge Street. Maps are also available at the beginning of the walk at the Ammerdown centre main gates, or ring Liz Robinson on 10373812245. Map and directions cost £3, cream teas £3. Cake and squash for children £1.

Why not make this a family afternoon jaunt and at the same time help raise funds for Positive Action on Cancer.

Surprise cheque

Surprise chequePositive Action on Cancer received a surprise cheque in October without having any idea that they were being targeted for an immensely successful fundraising event. This local Frome charity was delighted to receive £1010.00 from the organisers and founders of the Bristol club night Timbuk2.

Promoter Frankie Mann said “Cancer affects everyone at some point, either personally or through friends and family, so we thought this would be a noble cause to donate the cash to."

“It just shows how diverse the means for raising funds are – we are so grateful to Frankie and the organisation Buoyancy for organising this whole event and raising such a large amount for the charity” a spokesperson for Positive Action on Cancer said.

Pampered Hands for PAC

Pampered HandsA group of friends gathered at the home of Frome woman Sue Simms for some positive pampering with a difference.

Local beauticians Nikki Burbidge and Tracy Moore were there to give them manicures and pedicures in the relaxing atmosphere. Nikki and Tracy are no strangers to fundraising events; they love their work and they also enjoy supporting charities in their local community. They have also raised funds by running the ‘race for life’ for breast cancer.

A raffle was also held on the evening and £50 was raised for Positive Action on Cancer, the Frome based cancer counselling charity.

‘We are extremely fortunate to live in such a generous community’ said chief executive Jill Miller, ‘ a community that recognises the struggle local charities face and is willing to give its time and energy to support them’

Thank you Nikki and Tracy. Our thanks also to Sue Sims who hosted the evening.

Orchardleigh, the magnificent home of Chris Vincent, is the venue for a special fundraising event on Tuesday 10th of July this year to raise funds for Positive Action on Cancer, the Frome based charity.

Women are being offered an opportunity of a day complete relaxation - for the Mind, Body & Soul - with a difference in the middle of the hectic – now internationally known - Frome Festival.

Therapist Nikki Burbidge is organising a day for the local cancer counselling charity that will almost certainly be a sell-out event.

“I’m pulling in all the therapists I know will give their talented, professional services on the day“ said Nikki, whose mother lost her fight to cancer at the age of 38 when Nikki was seventeen years old. Nikki’s sister was 15 and her brother aged 7. “Most people are affected by cancer in some way, either personally or through a relative or friend if we can just make the journey easier for just one person its worth all the hard work to organise this day, I think Positive Action on Cancer is great resource in Frome and to have something like this charity in a small town like Frome is something to be proud of. No one knows when they will need the support of the service.”

Nikki, with the help of friends and other therapists is planning a full day using Orchardleigh and the splendid grounds, from 10am till 10pm for women to pamper themselves.

Therapies that day will include Facials, Manicures, La stone Therapy, Thai Massage, Reflexology, Shiatsu, Aromatherapy, Readings and lots more! Women can choose to use as many treatments as their time allows. There will be an adult bouncy castle to add that element of fun and an eight seater hot tub for those luxurious spells of relaxation between therapies and energising aerobics, pilates and Salsa classes.
Talks, demonstrations, food and refreshments will be available through out the day and some of the PAC team will be supporting the event too!

The event will be listed in the 2007 Frome Festival brochure and tickets will be on sale at the Cheese & Grain. Tickets are £45 and this will allow you access to the wonderful house and gardens, a one hour treatment of your choice, any exercise class, talks, hot tub and any other fun activity on the dayt!. Book early to avoid disappointment and remember you will be supporting a much valued local charity.

Airbus Volunteers Brighten up Charity Premises

Airbus TeamImage: Tony Wimpenny leads the team of Volunteers from the Airbus UK
Teams of employees from Airbus UK are getting out their paintbrushes and overalls to help decorate rooms for local charity ‘Positive Action on Cancer’.

The Frome-based charity is dedicated to providing valuable support in the way of counselling to anyone affected by cancer, including family, friends and carers as well as cancer patients. The volunteer teams will be providing a much-needed decorating service to brighten up the reception area and counselling rooms.

The first Airbus team to make a start on the work includes graduate engineers Ciaran O’Rourke, Tony Wimpenny and Matthew McMahon. Future teams will be taking over and finishing the work over the next few weeks.

Jenny Thomas, volunteer coordinator at PAC was delighted to locate this help through Macmillan Cancer support, in order to swell the volunteer activity at the charity. “We are thrilled that Airbus has offered to help with decorating the premises. Support like this makes a huge difference to sustaining this much-needed facility. We have also been well supported in this activity by the local branches of Focus Do it All and Homebase, who both very kindly donated paint to us. Their generosity has been most appreciated. ”

Jill Miller, Chief Executive of Positive Action on Cancer, said: “ Positive Action on Cancer are very lucky to have such a beautiful building donated to us from the Stroud & Swindon Building Society, so naturally our aim is to look after the inside, regularly decorating and maintaining it throughout. So a big thank you to Airbus to help us achieve this.”

Over the past 18-months, through the ‘Charity Challenge’ charity fundraising and employee volunteering initiative, Airbus UK employees have raised more than £600,000 for national and local charities and given up more than 54 weeks of their own time to provide practical help to local people in need.
